| With the new year comes a slew of new and returning TV hits, with an abundance of series or season premieres and midseason returns. With so many fun and exciting shows to choose from, how can one person decide what to watch this season? Let’s take a look at popular and much-anticipated shows making an appearance this winter.
Modern Family: Modern Family returned to ABC on Jan. 4 to a very excited fan base. The show is a mockumentary style comedy that follows the lives of three unique, interesting families. Now into its third season, Modern Family has received great acclaim since its premier in 2009. Junior Randy Lee was excited for the return of the show because “it's a hilarious show that is cleverly plotted with its unique family relationships.” This show is on every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m., so make sure to catch it if you’re interested!
New Girl: Fox's new television show, New Girl, returned from a short holiday break on Jan. 17. The show debuted on Sept. 20, 2011 and received mostly favorable responses from critics. The show outlines the life of Jess Day, a 20-something-year-old who moves into a new apartment after her boyfriend cheats on her, as she works toward getting over her breakup. The well-liked, bubbly woman moves in with three guys, including a bartender, a lawyer, and an ex-basketball player. According to junior Victoria Ing, New Girl has "fun, quirky characters" as "three boys open their home to a dorky, free-spirited girl, and they all form a bond despite their differences." In each episode, "the characters struggle with life, but because they have each other, life's difficulties don't stand a chance. It's a good message to send out." New Girl is on every Tuesday at 9:00 p.m., so don't miss the fun!
Once Upon a Time: A relatively new series, Once Upon a Time premiered on ABC on Oct. 23, 2011. After a short hiatus for the winter holidays, it returned on Jan. 8 for its eighth episode. It is a fairytale drama that follows the adventures of Emma Swan and her son, Henry, in Storybrooke, a small town that Henry believes is cursed and that all the people in the town are fairytale characters, their memories wiped by the Evil Queen. Emma and Henry work toward restoring the memories of the citizens of Storybrooke and defeating the Evil Queen. Sophomore Ellen Gao enjoys the show “because [she] prefers the darker, more twisted fairytales to the children’s versions.” You can catch Once Upon a Time on Sundays at 8:00 p.m.
White Collar: USA Network’s White Collar returned on Jan. 17, a midseason revival after a long, five-month hiatus. A police-procedural crime drama, the show follows the life of an ex-conman, Neal Caffrey, who was captured by FBI agent Peter Burke during his attempt to escape prison. Under the care of Burke, Caffrey begins to help the agency solve crimes and catch criminals. Midway through its third season, White Collar is, according to junior Rita Wang, “a super addicting show because of the action, as a crime drama.” She is excited to see the main character “revert back to his sneaky criminal life and the resolution of the cliffhanger from the latest episode.” White Collar is on every Tuesday at 10:00 p.m.
30 Rock: NBC’s comedy series created by Tina Fey, 30 Rock, returned for a 6th season on Jan. 12. Loosely based on Fey’s experiences as a writer for Saturday Night Live, the show takes place behind-the-scenes of fictional live comedy sketches supposedly airing on NBC. It follows the life of Liz Lemon, the head writer of a sketch comedy show who must deal with an arrogant boss and an eccentric star while running the show. Sophomore Dana Jee loves the series because “the characters are super hilarious, especially Tina Fey’s character, Liz Lemon. The show features funny predicaments, and it’s really witty and unique.” 30 Rock is on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m.; don’t miss out on all the laughs! | |
